From the Executive Director

Health care supply chain professionals play a critical role in helping to sustain the environment through intentional practice and conscientious policy. As our members engage in these efforts, the Association for Healthcare Resource & Materials Management (AHRMM) has a responsibility to educate, support, and advocate for them and for the profession at large. By partnering with the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) and the Association for the Healthcare Environment (AHE) to create the Sustainability Roadmap for Hospitals, AHRMM has assumed a leadership position in developing a comprehensive repository of knowledge and resources for professionals across many disciplines in the health care industry.

AHRMM has made the Sustainability Roadmap a strategic priority because it aligns with our mission to advance health care through supply chain excellence by providing education, leadership, and advocacy for professionals in hospitals, health systems, and related organizations that are accountable to the community and committed to health improvement. As well, AHRMM recognizes the crucial role of the supply chain in achieving environmental sustainability. With so many indicators pointing to the decline of global resources, never has it been so important to develop and support programs, policies, and initiatives that responsibly advance conditions that improve sustainability performance.

As the transformation of health care progresses, hospital leaders increasingly realize the need for developing sustainable and innovative supply chain strategy that lies at the intersection of cost, quality, and outcomes. Aligning supply chain performance with organizational goals and patient outcomes is a new approach to ensuring overall hospital sustainability in today’s era of outcome-based reimbursements.

This website is intended to be a toolbox of templates and policies to assist facilities and organizations in developing sustainability initiatives as well as a practical aide and guide as for weighing the cost benefits of implementing various measures. As the Roadmap grows, it will expand to include resources for hospitals at various levels of readiness and implementation. AHRMM is fortunate to have a task force of dedicated professionals that is developing and vetting policies, procedures, case studies, and best practices.

AHRMM has been involved in health care sustainability initiatives for several years, but it is time to increase our level of engagement. This Roadmap gives AHRMM the opportunity to step up our own efforts, even as we strive to provide a solid foundation on which the health care supply chain can build. I hope you find the Roadmap to be a rich resource that will challenge, stimulate, and support your work in this area. We all must play a role and do our part to ensure a healthy sustainable community for future generations.
