Statement on Environmental Sustainability
The Association for Healthcare Resource & Materials Management (AHRMM) of the American Hospital Association (AHA) recognizes the unique role it plays in promoting environmental sustainability efforts, both as an education association representing healthcare supply chain professionals, and as a nonprofit organization operating programs and delivering services that impact the environment. AHRMM embraces the definition of sustainability as the nexus between environmental performance improvements, financial viability, and long-term fiscal health, and social and human considerations of community health, safety, and satisfaction.
Environmental sustainability is a strategic initiative that incorporates all aspects of the CQO (Cost, Quality, and Outcomes) platform of the organization. Sustainable actions support health organizations and healthcare business partners commitment to financial responsibility, total quality in supply chain activities, and improvement in health outcomes for patients, providers, and the environment.
AHRMM is dedicated to protecting and enhancing sustainability initiatives through education, technology, vendor relationships, and administrative operations. AHRMM seeks to develop and support a healthcare supply chain community that is ecologically aware, environmentally friendly, and collaborative in its approach to seeking solutions to the challenges facing hospitals in their sustainability efforts. AHRMM further seeks to incorporate environmentally responsible practices as fundamental and integrated components of its operations and programs.
It is widely accepted that health care consumes a tremendous amount of resources in terms of energy, water, and materials, and experts estimate that supplies will overtake labor as the number one expense for hospitals within the next 10 years. Therefore, AHRMM is committed to examining opportunities for moving toward a sustainable health care supply chain that includes greening of manufacturing processes and distribution channels and reductions in our collective carbon footprint.
We believe that by working together, we can support best practices and widely accepted approaches utilized by local, state, and federal governments for years that take into account environmentally preferred procurement (EPP) considerations for products and services whose environmental impacts have been considered and found to be less damaging to the environment and human health when compared to competing products and services.
AHRMM will lead and advance effective environmental sustainability efforts within the health sector value chain. AHRMM's focus on sustainability is directly linked to and in support of its mission to advance healthcare through supply chain excellence by providing education, leadership, and advocacy to professionals in hospitals, health systems, and related organizations that are accountable to the community and committed to health improvement.
To that end, AHRMM is committed to developing content for the Sustainability Roadmap for Hospitals as a repository of comprehensive resources for healthcare supply chain professionals, in addition to providing education and advocating for these professionals as they work to improve the sustainability performance throughout the healthcare supply chain field.
