Statement on Sustainable Design, Construction, and Operation of Health Care Facilities
The American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) of the American Hospital Association (AHA) is acutely concerned about the unprecedented scale and speed of the decline in health of our global commons. We believe that health care organizations and the design community that supports us in developing new facilities and renovating existing ones impact the health and safety of the world we serve. Therefore, we must exercise leadership in our communities and throughout society by modeling ways to minimize and even reverse the impact of our facilities on the environment.
We understand there will be significant short- and long-term challenges associated with this effort. However, we believe there will be great short-, medium-, and long-term economic, health, social, and environmental benefits, including energy independence for the United States. We also believe these benefits will bring us stronger economic and strategic outcomes.
As a society of health care facility management and design professionals, we understand the responsibility that our industry has in promoting world health. We are committed to doing our part to protect the safety and health of both those we serve and the environment. We choose to undertake this work because we understand the vital importance of its success. In encouraging the health care industry’s strong commitment to environmental stewardship, we will not only be doing our part in healing the environment, we will also be leveraging our work by showing others that they can do it, too.
Accordingly, we encourage you to discuss plans in pursuit of environmental health, such as the reduction of
- Greenhouse gas emissions,
- Energy consumption,
- Water consumption, and
- Waste generation.
In recognition of the need to build support for this effort among health care institutions across the United States, we encourage other building owner association presidents and health care facilities to join this effort.
