Our Commitment to Sustainability

The American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE), the Association for the Healthcare Environment (AHE), and the Association for Healthcare Resource & Materials Management (AHRMM) of the American Hospital Association (AHA) are acutely aware of both the opportunities and the challenges that accompany efforts to integrate sustainable practices into the health care environment.

Every health facility faces a different set of drivers, economic strengths, and environmental forces, so there is no "one-size-fits-all" solution for implementing sustainable practices across the health care industry. In response to this situation, our organizations chose to undertake development of this website together because we understand the vital importance of providing our members and others in the industry with unbiased information from a trusted resource. We recognize that significant short- and long-term challenges will be associated with the effort to achieve sustainable practices, but it is also our belief that striving for sustainability in our facilities will have vast short- and long-term economic, health, and environmental benefits.

We encourage our members to exercise leadership in our industry and their communities as well as throughout society by modeling ways to minimize, and even reverse, the impact of U.S. health care facilities on the environment.
